I am a union sheet metal worker. currently a 1st year apprentice. every year the apprentice schools have competitions in HVAC, Service, Test And Balance, Industrial, and the one I went for, Architectural. all 4 apprentice years take the same exam depending on what field they are going for. Architectural had 1-4th year, 3-3rd years, I believe 2- second years and 4-1st years. it is broken into 3 sections, written, plans & specs reading, and a project, this year it was a gutter miter. the top person from each field goes to regionals in January.

last night in welding class I asked the instructor what my score was. later he came back after he tallied up all of the scores and told me “pack your bags, your going to Cleveland”…….(80) aaaaahhhhh! I beat out everyonein my local, the closest was a third year I beat him by 2 points. I was pumped up by the end of the project building I was almost bouncing off the walls, LOL. I just love building stuff. Now I have to study the two books, about 3 inches thick each. and practice things like joint soldering for January

the following are pictures of my winning project. bear in mind I had not previously made one of these, they are a 3rd year project.

my project. I had to lay it out from a blank piece of metal. it is held together with pop rivets

this is a sketch similar to the one I was given, other then the measurements are missing.

and this was the profile the gutter had to fit to when done
